Social Studies

American History (A & B) (1 credit). This course is designed to familiarize students with the history and historical themes of our nation to the Civil War. This course will equip students with the basic American history knowledge that all high school graduates should possess.

Arizona History (A & B) (1 credit). This course is designed to familiarize basic concepts of Arizona's geography and the highlights of our state's history. This course uses multiple means to compare and contrast different historical accounts of events in Arizona's history.

Economics (A & B) (1 credit). This course is designed to prepare high school students to become productive members of the workforce, knowledgeable consumers, prudent savers and investors, effective participants in our economy, and wise decision-makers throughout their lives. Students will learn economic theory and the operation of the economy as a whole, and they will learn to make reasoned judgments about personal economic decisions. Students will apply the basic economic principles to his/her daily choices and will evaluate both the immediate and long-term effects of decisions. Students will learn economic systems, supply and demand, costs, competition, and the role of financial institutions.

Founding Fathers (0.5 credit). This course is designed for students at a lower reading level. The course is a brief overview of the roots of our nation s government with a focus on the Constitution of the United States of America. The course examines the events that led up to the Declaration of Independence and the Revolutionary War, the writing of the United States Constitution, and the implications for today's society.

Government (1 credit). This course is designed to familiarize students with the foundation and history of the government of the United States. Students should understand the principles of how and why our government was founded, and what keeps it working today, including the common commitments to the ideals contained in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the United States of America, and the Bill of Rights. Students will learn where the ideas of liberty, equality, and justice come from and the basic principles of government intended to protect each individual s right to the enjoyment of these ideas.

Honors American History (1 credit). This course is an in depth exploration of the people, places, events, and themes that make America truly unique. It begins with an overview of American history before the Civil War, and then delves into the specific details of nearly all that has transpired for our country since then. This is a college preparatory course that should give students the foundation they need in order to take more advanced and specialized courses in history.

Honors World History & Geography (1 credit). This course is designed to familiarize basic concepts of geography and the highlights of world history. This is a college preparatory course that should give students the foundation they need in order to take more advanced and specialized courses in history and geography.

World History & Geography (A & B) (1 credit). This course seeks to familiarize students with the basic concepts and highlights of world history. The course gives students the information they need about some of the most important events in world history, then asks them to answer questions and make inferences based on what they have read. It will also give them opportunities to conduct research outside of their textbook so that they might gain greater perspective.
